A big black cat was seen stalking our girls at dusk this evening. Matt saw it from the bathroom window just in time. He ran outside yelling to scare the bad kitty (which in turn startled me). It was apparently on top of the coop roof, slinking along, trying to get close enough to pounce.
Bad kitty! Bad!
We are putting up the netting tomorrow. The girls need to be safe from evil neighborhood cats. Perhaps we ought to leave Lucky out at dusk for the next few days just to be sure- he would intimidate the darn cat just by being there.

The Frequently "Clucked" Questions Area
Q: What made you two decide to get chickens?
A: A few of our friends and coworkers have small chicken flocks, and we thought it was a great idea. After visiting a coworker's house who has a nice little henhouse and run in downtown Bozeman, MT my mind was set. Matt agreed to it shortly afterwards.
Q: Are you getting a rooster?
A: No. Roosters are loud, don't lay eggs, and are frequently very defensive (borderline violent).
Q: How many eggs are we talking about here?
A: It depends on a lot of things, but with 6 hens it is reasonable to guess we'll get about 4 or 5 eggs a day. That might slow down a lot in winter or when the hens are moulting their feathers. Some days we might get 6- but that will probably be rare.
Q: Are you going to sell these eggs, or start taking cholesterol medications?
A: Neither! We intend to eat a healthy amount of them and give the rest away to friends or the local food bank.
Q: Are you naming them?
A: Yes. They are named Mrs. Tweedy, Pot Pie, Rosie, Zippy, Beldar, Biggie Rockette and Littles Rockette. Pria (our rooster) now lives with another family where he is more welcome to crow and generally do rooster things.
